Machame Route Guide: 6 or 7 Days on Kilimanjaro

Why Machame is widely used

Machame is a camping route that moves through several distinct ecological zones and connects with the southern circuit. Its route profile includes meaningful elevation changes that guides use as part of the acclimatization plan.

Six days or seven

The shorter version compresses the schedule. A seven-day itinerary normally gives more time to distribute effort and can be attractive to climbers who are not constrained by one extra day. More days do not guarantee success, but route pacing is an important planning variable.

Barranco and Karanga

The route is known for the Barranco area and the Barranco Wall, which is a scramble rather than technical climbing for most trekkers. The itinerary then continues toward Karanga and the high camp used before the summit attempt.
