10-Day Machame + Serengeti Tanzania Adventure

The 10-day Machame + Serengeti is designed for travelers who want a varied southern approach known for big changes in scenery and useful climb-high, sleep-lower acclimatization days. Manda Adventures coordinates the climb from Moshi with a pre-trek briefing, gear check, gate transfer and a route plan that is explained before you leave town. The mountain is never treated as a race: the pace, hydration breaks, meals, rest and honest communication with your guide are part of the climbing strategy.

The route is presented day by day so you can see where the hard sections sit, how the sleeping altitude changes and where the itinerary creates room to acclimatize. Weather and trail conditions can change quickly on Kilimanjaro, so the final walking times and camp routine remain subject to the lead guide’s safety decisions. No responsible operator can guarantee a summit, but a sensible schedule and well-prepared crew give you a much better foundation for the attempt.

This package is shown as Private Classic. Your final quotation confirms exactly which hotel nights, mountain services, transfers, meals, park fees and personal items are included. If you want to add safari or Zanzibar after the climb, we recommend allowing realistic recovery time before another long travel day.

Tour highlights

  • Route-specific mountain sequence
  • Pre-climb briefing in Moshi
  • Guided high-altitude trekking
  • Daily pace and altitude monitoring
  • Summit attempt built into the route
  • Gate transfers confirmed with the final quote

Before you choose this itinerary

Planning a 10-day Machame + Serengeti trip starts with dates, season and the amount of time you want to spend moving versus exploring. We use the package as a starting framework, then check route sequence, accommodation location, transfer time and any activity restrictions before confirming the final itinerary.

Altitude first

Fitness matters, but altitude is the defining challenge. A slow pace and honest symptom reporting are part of responsible climbing.

Gear check

Use the pre-climb briefing to fix missing layers, waterproofing, headlamp, gloves and other essentials before leaving Moshi.

Recovery day

A safari can start after the mountain, but many travelers appreciate one lower-altitude night before another long transfer.

Guide decisions

Weather, trail conditions and individual health can change the day. The lead guide’s safety decision overrides the printed itinerary.

Day by day

Tour details & itinerary

The sequence below shows how the trip normally works. Exact lodge names, camp allocation, flight sectors and pickup times are reconfirmed in the written itinerary for your travel dates.

Day 1Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate for registration, then begin through dense rainforest. The first day is humid and can be muddy after rain, but the gradient is generally steady. Guides use the day to establish a slow mountain pace and check that packs, footwear and rain layers are working comfortably.

Focus: Rainforest • steady first climbMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerOvernight: Machame Camp
Day 2Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Climb out of the forest into heath and moorland with increasingly wide views across the Shira Plateau. The trail feels more open and the air cooler. Arrive with enough time to rest, hydrate and take a short acclimatization walk if the guide considers it useful.

Focus: Moorland • Shira PlateauMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerOvernight: Shira Camp
Day 3Shira to Lava Tower, descend to Barranco

Ascend toward Lava Tower for a valuable high point before dropping to Barranco to sleep lower. It is a demanding but purposeful acclimatization day. Eat even if appetite is reduced, keep drinking and tell the guide early about headache, nausea or unusual fatigue.

Focus: Climb high • sleep lowerMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerOvernight: Barranco Camp
Day 4Barranco Wall to Karanga

Climb the Barranco Wall in the morning and continue across the southern face to Karanga. The scenery changes repeatedly as the trail crosses ridges and valleys beneath the upper mountain. This stage is shorter on many seven-day programs and gives useful recovery time.

Focus: Barranco Wall • southern traverseMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerOvernight: Karanga Camp
Day 5Karanga to Barafu

Continue to Barafu, the high camp for the summit attempt. The landscape is sparse and exposed. After an early meal, prepare every layer and item needed for the night climb, then rest while the guide completes the final summit briefing.

Focus: High camp • summit briefingMeals: Breakfast, lunch and early dinnerOvernight: Barafu Camp
Day 6Barafu to Uhuru Peak, descend toward Mweka

Set off in the early hours and climb slowly toward Stella Point. From the crater rim, continue to Uhuru Peak if conditions and individual health allow. After photographs and only a short time at altitude, begin the long descent, first to Barafu and then much lower toward Mweka.

Focus: Summit attempt • long descentMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinnerOvernight: Mweka Camp
Day 7Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Walk down through rainforest to the park gate, complete checkout and meet the transfer vehicle for Moshi. The lower altitude feels noticeably easier, but knees and legs can be tired after the summit descent, so the final walk is taken at a comfortable pace.

Focus: Final descent • transfer to MoshiMeals: Breakfast and lunchOvernight: Moshi hotel if included
Day 8Arrival / safari departure from Arusha / Moshi

Meet your Manda Adventures driver-guide at the agreed hotel or arrival point. After a short route briefing, begin the safari in a private or shared 4x4 as confirmed. The first day is kept practical: we use the road transfer to position you well for the wildlife areas ahead rather than adding unnecessary detours. Your guide explains the vehicle setup, park routine and the timing for the following morning.

Focus: Arusha / MoshiMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner as confirmedOvernight: Safari lodge / camp in or near Arusha / Moshi
Day 9Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Arusha / Moshi

After breakfast, continue the Tarangire, Ngorongoro & Serengeti journey with a day focused on Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The guide reads the landscape rather than following a rigid checklist. Stops are shaped around fresh tracks, animal movement, light for photography, road conditions and the time needed to reach the next lodge comfortably. Meals and the exact overnight property follow the written quotation, so there is no ambiguity about what has been booked.

Focus: Ngorongoro Conservation AreaMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner as confirmedOvernight: Safari lodge / camp in or near Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Day 10Final game drive and return / onward connection

Use the final wildlife hours according to your lodge location and onward plan, then travel to Arusha, Moshi, the airport or another confirmed connection. We protect enough transfer time for the road conditions and do not schedule a last-minute game drive that puts an international flight at risk.

Focus: Arusha / MoshiMeals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner as confirmedOvernight: Safari lodge / camp in or near Arusha / Moshi

Accommodation & properties

For a Kilimanjaro trip, accommodation normally matters most before and after the mountain. A practical base in the Moshi or relevant gate area gives time for briefing, equipment checks and recovery. On the mountain, the sleeping arrangement follows the route: most routes use tents, while Marangu uses mountain huts. Your final quote should state exactly which pre- and post-climb hotel nights are included.

We do not lock every package to one hotel because availability, room setup and season change the best choice. Tell us whether you want budget, mid-range, premium or luxury accommodation, and whether you need single, double, twin, triple or family rooms.

What changes the price?

Price is provided on request because the real total depends on travel dates, party size, accommodation, park and conservation charges, private or shared transport, internal flights and optional activities. We prefer a current written quote to an attractive number that no longer matches the requested trip.

Kilimanjaro park and mountain fees

Conservation, camping or hut, rescue and other official mountain charges form a substantial part of a responsible Kilimanjaro package.

Group size

Private solo travel normally costs more per person than a small group because vehicle, guide and transfer costs are shared by fewer travelers.

Accommodation style

Budget camping, mid-range lodges, premium properties and luxury camps have very different nightly rates and seasonal supplements.

Season and availability

Peak travel periods can affect lodge availability, internal flights and transfer costs, so exact dates matter when preparing a quote.

Transfers and extensions

Airport transfers, extra hotel nights, domestic flights, Zanzibar extensions and special activities change the total package scope.

Final inclusions

The clearest comparison is the complete list of included services, not only the headline price. Manda Adventures confirms the full inclusions before booking.

Best time to travel

Tanzania can be visited throughout the year, but the right month depends on whether your priority is dry-season wildlife, migration, calving, Kilimanjaro conditions, a quieter travel period or Zanzibar beach time.

PeriodWhat it can mean for this trip
January–MarchOften clearer periods with cool high-altitude conditions
June–OctoberGenerally drier and popular, with cold nights
April–MayWetter trails and fewer climbers
